The Early Years

James P. Dunne was an American soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War. For his gallant actions at the Siege of Vicksburg, McGuire was awarded the Medal of Honor. James Dunne was born on 26 Nov 1840.

The Civil War

In 1850, Martin, age seven, resided with the Samuel Cunningham Family with his siblings Harriet, Clarissa (Claripa), Eliza Ann, and Calvin in Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois, United States.  Martin, age seventeen and a Farm Hand, resided with the Daniel Bowers Family in Subdivision 66, Shelby, Illinois, United States in 1860.

On July 10, 1865, Corporal James Dunne mustered out of service.

For his gallant action at the Siege of Vicksburg, James Dunne was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Corporal James P. Dunne fought in the American Civil War and received the country's highest award for bravery during combat, the Medal of Honor, for his action during the Siege of Vicksburg at Warren County, Mississippi, United States. Corporal Dunne bravely defended Chicago Mercantile battery,
Illinois Light Artillery during the storming party on 22 May 1863.

President Grover Cleveland of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, took pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Corporal James P. Dunne, United States Army, on 15 Jan 1895 for extraordinary heroism, while serving with Chicago Mercantile battery, Illinois Light Artillery in action at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 22 May 1863.

In accordance to military tradition, service members salute Medal of Honor recipients, regardless of rank. This is a matter of respect for the recipients' sacrifices and is not required by law. Department of Defense Saluting MOH Recipients. In addition, MOH Recipients receive special benefits: 1. A Monthly Pension and Special Retirement Pay; 2. Uniform Allowances; 3. On-Base Parking Spots; 4. Priority Space-A Travel; 5. Invitations to Presidential Inaugurals; 6. Academy Appointments for Dependents; 7. A Medal of Honor Flag; 8. Full Military Burial Honors Military Times, Special Benefits for MOH Recipients.

Postbellum

James Dunne married Eva Fitch about 1870. In 1870 James and his wife Eva, were living in Chicago, Illinois. Also in their household was Lizzie Dunne, age 18, (presumably his sister). He was a news agent by trade.   In 1880, James Dunne and his wife, Eva, were living in Chicago, Illinois. They had 2 daughters living with them: Agnes, age 6, and Celia, age 1. He worked for a news agency.

Death & Burial

Medal of Honor Corporal James P. Dunne, died on Saturday, 13 Feb 1915 at the age of 74 years, 1 month, 18 days.  Sergeant Dunne is interred and commemorated in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Evanston, Cook County, Illinois, United States.
